Without further ado, Season 40:

THE EFFECT by Lucy Prebble | Opens October 2024

Following its critically acclaimed run at London’s National Theater, join us for Lucy Prebble’s (Emmy Award-winning writer of HBO’s Succession) electrifying thriller. A couple meet during a clinical trial for a new antidepressant. As the trial progresses, they fall in love. Is their chemistry real or is it simply ‘chemistry’? Ethics and emotion, sex and science, free will and fate collide in this gripping exploration of neurons versus neurosis.

“Very clever—and ultimately more than clever…ingenious.” New York Times

AMADEUS by Peter Shaffer | Opens November 2024

Join us for a journey of passion, obsession, and the timeless power of music in this Tony Award-winning epic masterpiece. Amadeus transports us to 1823, Vienna. Emperor Joseph II’s opulent court is abuzz with whispers that Mozart didn’t die from natural causes– that Antonio Salieri, court composer and Mozart’s bitter rival poisoned him. Dumbstruck by the vulgar, petulant boy genius, Salieri declares war on God himself in this tour de force production that delves deep into the psyche of two musical maestros at war. Amadeus explores the price of fame, the pain of mediocrity in the shadow of genius, and the eternal quest for artistic immortality.

“A marvelously engrossing and...moving costume‐thriller, a feast for the eye and the ear.” The Observer

GIRLS & BOYS by Dennis Kelly | Opens January 2025

Shocking, compassionate, and courageous – It’s Fleabag meets Medea. Girls & Boys joins the fate-defying intensity of Greek tragedy with the searing simplicity of an intimate confession. Two strangers meet-cute in line at the airport. They fall in love, get married, enjoy fulfilling careers, and raise two beautiful children. Life is near idyllic…until it isn’t. This gripping New England premiere is a beautifully blistering one-woman show that explores the devastating fall out of a decaying marriage.

“For anyone interested in the art of stage acting, attendance is mandatory.” Hollywood Reporter

BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY by Stephen Adly Guirgis | Opens February 2025

Filled with the working-class spirit of Sweat (2022) and the dark humor of Hangmen (2023), this Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a perfect fit for our stage. Retired NYPD cop Walter “Pops” Washington is at a crossroads. Recently widowed and fighting a lawsuit against his former employer, he’s struggling to keep his rent-controlled digs on Riverside Drive. The police want him to sell out, his son is on parole, he’s been robbed by a close friend, and the church won’t stop knocking at his door! With crackling dialogue and surprising humor, this Rhode Island premiere asks: What’s a good man to do, when caught between Riverside and Crazy?

“A stunning intellectual achievement that’s also a total gas, a rare breed of theater deserving of protection at all costs.” Variety

HAMLET by William Shakespeare | Directed by Tony Estrella & Rachel Walshe | Opens April 2025

Shakespeare’s masterpiece of masterpieces returns to The Gamm in a brand-new production to mark our 40th Birthday! Hamlet is everything: a ghost story, political intrigue, family drama, a tale of war, murder, madness, and of course revenge. Not to mention a graveyard brawl, pirates, thrilling sword play and the definitive examination of the plight of man. Celebrate our birthday with “the play, of all plays ever written, the world could least do without.” (writer Anthony Burgess)

Season after season, The Gamm has been the place to see Shakespeare’s works come to life for contemporary audiences. The Independent
